When performing external compliance audits, image guidance is a common area of concern due to errors related to incorrect code selection, unbundling, and non-adherence to authoritative guidance. The purpose of the program is to review those areas of concerns and call attention to common compliance risk areas. The session will address essential topics to include medical record documentation, correct coding based on the image type, modality, and setting, requirements for imaging and localization, and appropriate billing practices. This session will also provide recommendations for implementing an effective internal charge review and validation process to lessen the potential for compliance risks for your radiation oncology department.
Goal: Present authoritative guidance and recommendations on compliant use of image guidance procedures within typical radiation oncology settings.
Objective 1: Review necessary medical record documentation to support image guidance codes.
Objective 2: Examine the different types of image guidance and the corresponding CPT® / HCPCS codes based on the setting.
Objective 3: Demonstrate coding rules and authoritative guidance for different treatment modalities utilized in radiation oncology.
Objective 4: Discuss implementation of an effective charge verification process to assist with compliance goals.
